Top 5 in AI

How we rank

Rankings are only worth the method behind them. Ours is simple to state and expensive to do: use the apps for real, score them against a rubric, keep only five, and re-test when the ground moves. The details:

1.We use everything we rank

Every app in our rankings is tested hands-on with real work — real documents, real code, real meetings, real production tasks. We maintain paid subscriptions to the tools we cover (bought at retail, like you would) and log our testing so claims trace back to sessions, not spec sheets.

2.Five picks. Actual cuts.

A ranking with 27 entries is an ad unit, not advice. Capping every category at five forces the honest question — 'would we actually tell a friend to use this?' — and the Also Tested section names what missed the cut and why.

3.Scored rubrics, per category

Each category has a weighted rubric (published at the bottom of its page): output quality always weighs heaviest, then capability depth, workflow fit, reliability, and price. Two editors score independently; disagreements get argued out with evidence, and the rubric — not the loudest voice — settles ties.

4.Rank follows score — and ties get explained

The composite rubric score sets the order: #1 has the highest score, #5 the lowest, with no invisible overrides. When two apps tie, the category page says exactly how we broke it (usually: which app serves the category's primary reader for more of their day). If you ever catch an inversion, that's a bug — report it and we'll fix it publicly.

5.Re-tested when the ground moves — with receipts

AI apps change monthly, so rankings that don't are fiction. We re-run category tests when major models or pricing changes ship, every page shows its last-tested date, and the changelog records every ranking move and why it happened. If a ranking is older than the latest frontier release, we're already re-testing it.

6.No pay-to-play. Period.

Nobody can buy a ranking, a score, or a mention. We don't accept payment for placement, we don't let vendors preview rankings, and 'List Your App' submissions only enter the same testing queue as everything else. If we ever add affiliate links, they'll be labeled and will never affect order — the ranking is the product, and selling it would end us.

7.AI-assisted, human-decided

Yes, a site about AI apps uses AI: for drafting assistance, transcription, and test harnesses. Every ranking decision, score, and verdict is made by humans who did the testing — and we publish that fact because you deserve to know how the sausage is made.

8.Evidence, and what's coming

Every review carries the honest trade-offs ('The catch'), a 'skip it if' line, and the model generation it covers. The next evidence layer — published side-by-side output galleries for the image, video, voice, and music categories, same prompts across every ranked tool — is in production. Until it ships, we keep claims specific and reproducible, and we won't publish a number we can't stand behind.

Our editorial framework

The Receipts Standard

The principles above compress into one named bar that every page on this site is held to — cite it, hold us to it, or steal it for your own publication:

  1. Rank follows score. No invisible overrides; ties get explained on the page.
  2. Every number carries a primary source. Stats are verified against the source of record before publishing, linked in place, and no older than six months — including numbers our own readers hand us.
  3. Freshness stamps mean re-verification. A date on a page means we actually re-checked it on that date — a scan that finds nothing to change is still a scan, and the stamp only moves when one happened.
  4. Corrections and kills are public. Claims that fail verification get named in the changelog — the rumors we refused to print, the prices we fixed, the rankings we re-ordered. A ranking site that never admits a fix is telling you something.
  5. Every review names its catch. A ‘skip it if’ line and the documented gotcha, on all fifty reviews — the best app for most people is still the wrong app for someone.
  6. Nobody can buy any of this. No paid placements, no vendor previews, no exceptions.

Spot something wrong?

Prices change, features ship, and we occasionally miss. If a fact on any page is stale, tell us and we'll fix it fast — corrections make the rankings better for everyone.
