AI Token Counter & Cost Calculator

Paste a prompt, a document, or a file and see how many tokens it is, what it costs to send to GPT-6, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and Muse at API list prices, and how much of each model's context window it fills. OpenAI counts use the public o200k_base encoding; the rest are labeled estimates built from each vendor's own rule of thumb. Nothing you paste leaves this page.

How many tokens is my text, and what does it cost to send to an AI model?

Short answer: in English, one token is about four characters or three-quarters of a word, so 1,000 words is roughly 1,300 tokens. A one-page prompt costs a fraction of a cent on every model below; a full novel runs from about a cent on GPT-6 Luna to a little over a dollar on GPT-6 Astra. Paste your text for the exact figure.

o200k counts run OpenAI's public o200k_base encoding in your browser; it is tiktoken's encoding for the GPT-5 family and the best available count for GPT-6 until OpenAI publishes otherwise. Est. counts apply each vendor's own rule of thumb (Anthropic ≈ 2.7 characters per token on Claude 4.7 and later, Google ≈ 4) or reuse the o200k count where no tokenizer is published (xAI, Meta); expect them to land within about 10–15% of the vendor's count for English prose, further off for code and non-Latin scripts. Prices are standard API list prices per million tokens; chat-app subscriptions don't bill per token. Nothing you paste is sent anywhere.

What do common documents cost to send to each model?

Input cost only, at standard API list prices, using the three-quarters-of-a-word rule. The reply is billed separately at the higher output rate, which the calculator adds for you.

Word-to-token ratio from OpenAI's help page ("1 token is approximately three-quarters of a word"); Claude's current tokenizer runs about 30% denser, so its real counts are higher. Input cost only.

How are tokens counted and costs calculated here?

Tokens. For OpenAI models the page runs the public o200k_base encoding from tiktoken in your browser. tiktoken maps that encoding to the GPT-5 family and, as of October 17, 2026, has no GPT-6 entry, so for GPT-6 Astra, Sol, and Luna it is the best available count rather than a vendor-confirmed one; we will switch the day OpenAI publishes a GPT-6 encoding. Anthropic offers a free count_tokens endpoint rather than a tokenizer; its glossary says Claude 4.7 and later produce about 30% more tokens than the older rule of 3.5 English characters per token, so Claude 5.x rows use about 2.7 characters per token and the legacy Haiku 4.5 row keeps 3.5. Google's tokens guide puts a Gemini token at about four characters. xAI and Meta publish no tokenizer and no rule, so their rows reuse the o200k count. Estimates are usually within 10–15% for English prose and drift further on code, tables, and non-Latin text.

Cost. Input cost is your token count times the model's per-million input price; output cost uses the expected-output figure you set. Both are standard list prices with no prompt caching, batch discount, or free-tier allowance, and the "number of runs" field simply multiplies the result. Long-context surcharges are applied when your prompt crosses the vendor's threshold and flagged in the row.

Context. The bar shows how much of the model's window your request would fill. OpenAI, Anthropic, and Gemini 4 Argon define the window as input plus output, so those rows add your expected output tokens; Gemini 3.8 Flash, Grok, and Muse rows count input only. Red means the request would be rejected as-is.

What do GPT-6, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and Muse cost per million tokens?

Standard API prices per million tokens, each read from the vendor's own page on the date shown. Click a model name for our review of the product it ships in.

Token counting: FAQ

What is a token?

The unit language models read and bill by. A token is a chunk of text, usually a word or part of a word plus the space before it. In English, one token is roughly four characters or three-quarters of a word, so 1,000 tokens is about 750 words. Code, numbers, and non-Latin scripts cost more tokens per character.

Why does the same text show different token counts for different models?

Each vendor has its own tokenizer. OpenAI publishes its encodings through tiktoken, so the o200k_base count is exact for that encoding (tiktoken maps it to the GPT-5 family and lists no GPT-6 entry yet, so we treat it as the best available count for GPT-6). Anthropic and Google offer count-tokens API endpoints instead of a downloadable tokenizer; Anthropic's docs say Claude 4.7 and later produce about 30% more tokens than the older rule of 3.5 English characters per token, and Google puts a Gemini token at about four characters, so those rows are labeled estimates.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. The tokenizer and the price table are downloaded to your browser once, and all counting and arithmetic happen there. There is no server endpoint behind this page, no account, and no analytics on what you paste.

Do these costs apply to ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, or Gemini subscriptions?

No. Subscriptions charge a flat monthly fee with usage limits rather than per-token billing. The costs here are the vendors' standard API list prices, which is what you pay when you build on the model or use a tool that bills API usage through to you. Our AI app pricing index covers the subscription side.

What does the context-window percentage mean?

Every model has a maximum number of tokens it can hold at once. The percentage shows how much of that limit your request would fill. Above about 60–70% you leave little room for conversation history and tool results; over 100% the request is rejected or truncated. Where the vendor defines the window as input plus output (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini 4 Argon) the figure includes your expected output tokens; where it publishes separate input and output budgets (Gemini 3.8 Flash) or input only (Grok, Muse), it counts your input alone.

Why is GPT-6 Astra's price doubled on a long prompt?

OpenAI charges 2× the input rate and 1.5× the output rate for the whole request once a prompt passes 272,000 input tokens. Anthropic's Haiku 5.5 steps to $0.50 and $2.50 per million above 100,000 tokens, and xAI bills Grok 4.7 at $4 and $12 once a prompt reaches 200,000. Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Fable 5.1, Gemini, and Muse charge the same rate across the full window. The table applies these rules automatically and flags the row when one kicks in.

Where do the prices come from, and how current are they?

Each row in the price table below links to the vendor page it was read from and shows the date we last checked it. Gemini 4 Argon's $2/$10 is an introductory rate through November 30, 2026; it becomes $4/$20 on December 1, and we will update the table that day.
