Interaction model
TieThe fundamental fork. Cursor: you're in the editor, agents beside you — tab completion reading your mind, Composer shipping ticket-sized changes you watch happen. Claude Code: you're the tech lead — describe the outcome, review the diff. Neither is better; they're for different relationships with the keyboard.
Capability ceiling
Winner: Claude CodeFor fully delegated, long-horizon work — hours-long tasks with checkpoints, test loops, and a commit at the end — Claude Code sustains autonomy that rivals still struggle to match, and September's Fable 5.1 upgrade jumped Anthropic's Terminal-Bench score from 42.0% to 55.8%. When you hand off the whole job, this is the stronger pair of hands.
Model freedom
Winner: CursorCursor routes work to Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, or its own fast models per task — insurance against any one lab's off week. The 2026 asterisk from our review: OpenAI has proposed cutting off its models in November post-SpaceX-acquisition (~5% of Cursor's traffic, with Anthropic and Google expanding to fill it). Claude Code is one lab's models — currently the best coding models, but one lab's.
Learning curve
Winner: CursorCursor is VS Code with superpowers — your extensions, keybindings, and muscle memory import on day one. Claude Code is terminal-first, which senior engineers call home and IDE-native developers call homework. For teams rolling out broadly, Cursor onboards faster.
Works where code lives
Winner: Claude CodeSSH into a prod box, CI pipelines, git worktrees, nightly automation — because Claude Code isn't welded to a GUI, it slots into places an IDE can't go. Its subagents, hooks, and MCP servers are the primitives teams build real engineering systems on.
The real monthly cost
TieIdentical honest math: $20 gets you started (Cursor Pro; Claude Pro includes Claude Code), and serious daily agent use lands both at $60–200/month — Cursor via usage tiers, Claude via Max plans. Note Claude Code's September 14 limits change (a net ~17% weekly cut vs the summer promo, by Anthropic's own math) when budgeting.
Ecosystem trajectory
Winner: CursorCursor is building an empire: Origin code hosting, Vercel deploys, self-hosted agent infrastructure, day-one model drops. Claude Code's ecosystem is deep but narrower by design. If you're betting on a platform rather than a tool, Cursor's ambition is the story.
