What is Instinct?
Instinct's pitch fits in one line from its homepage: 'there are no new interfaces.' You don't open an app — you text it on iMessage or WhatsApp, or call it, and it comes back with the thing done. Built by 23-year-old ex-Sierra researcher Noah Shinn, it connects to your email, messaging, calendar, and — unusually — your device's screen, audio, and location, then operates 'a phone and a computer' on your behalf. Shinn's users, per TechCrunch, 'planned cross-country road trips, bought weekly groceries and concert tickets, and cancelled hundreds of dollars of subscriptions.' In our testing the proactivity is what separates it: it follows up threads you dropped and nudges you about what you forgot, which is the promise every assistant made and none kept.
The market believes: a $250 million Series B at a $2.5 billion valuation (per TechCrunch, August 26) co-led by Index and Benchmark, roughly four months after a ~$50 million valuation, with more than 100,000 users on an invite list and reports of talks at $10 billion. The catch is equally real. Instinct's safety record is the field's worst — TechCrunch's August 24 investigation documented an email sent without asking, sign-up codes read from inboxes, and a 'perpetual and irrevocable' data license the company rewrote two days later — and its terms still disclaim any guarantee that confirmations will stop mistakes. Texting is the whole interface

Proactive by design
The homepage promises 'following up on threads you've dropped, proactively calling or texting you.' Reviewers single this out — it noticed one tester was overdue for a medical appointment and booked it. No other agent here initiates like this.
Instinct Concierge
Since September 16, it places real phone calls in early access — the restaurant that doesn't take online reservations, the cable-bill dispute, the dentist's cancellation list. The 'white glove' tier of agent work, and the hardest thing on this page to automate.

Free during the invite beta, with no published pricing. Reporting via The Information says Shinn has indicated the company may not charge users at all, with advertising under consideration; the terms nonetheless reserve the right to bill 'the applicable fees' by card. Concierge pricing: not disclosed.
The real price today is access — you need an invite, and the service warns of slower responses at capacity. Purchases run through Stripe Link with per-transaction approval, and Link's terms make approved agent purchases yours regardless of intent.
Our verdict
The most capable personal agent we've used and the clearest picture of where the category is going — if you can get in, and if you set it to ask before it acts. Until it opens publicly, most people should start with Muse and keep an Instinct invite request pending.
Skip it if: You don't have an invite (it's waitlisted and running at capacity), you're outside the US or under 18, or you need an agent that asks before every send — only Stripe Link purchases have a hard approval step here.

Is Instinct safe to connect to Gmail?
It's the least conservative agent here: its terms don't guarantee confirmations, a tester documented an unapproved email, and disconnecting Gmail doesn't delete indexed mail until you use the delete tool at app.instinct.com/workspace.
