What is Meta Muse?
Meta launched Muse on September 8 as 'the world's first personal AI agent built for everyone', and the 'everyone' part is the point: it's free, on iOS, Android, the web, WhatsApp, and (since September 17) the Mac, with no waitlist — and on September 18 it displaced ChatGPT as the #1 free iPhone app in the US, the same day it reached Canada and Meta opened connector-building to developers. (Sensor Tower's only published install estimate is 83,000 US iOS downloads in the first three days; ignore the larger numbers circulating on X — none has a source.) Powered by Muse Spark 1.3, it connects Gmail, Google Calendar, your bank via Plaid (read-only), and a Stripe Link wallet for purchases, then opens a browser, fills forms, and negotiates on your behalf. What impressed us most is the permission design: actions are split into read and write, you choose how often it asks, and every approval prompt offers Allow once / for this task / for this site / Always — the most legible consent model in the category.
The trade-offs are Meta-shaped. Your data lives in a per-user 'Secure VM' isolated from other users and from Meta's ad systems — but not from Meta, which retains operational access (the 'private even from Meta' Confidential VM is a future product). Training on your Muse interactions is on by default. And the reliability gap between demo and reality was visible at launch, with PYMNTS' test completing none of three purchases and Reuters reporting employees had flagged pre-launch failures. Cons
- US and Canada only (Android still US), 18+; Gmail, Calendar, Plaid, and Link are the main connectors — no Outlook yet
- Trains on your interactions by default; the 'Secure VM' doesn't wall off Meta itself
- Checkout reliability was poor at launch, and outbound phone calls arrived only in beta on Sept 17
- Facebook, Instagram, and Threads connect automatically via Accounts Center — you don't opt in

Purchases with a hard stop
Every purchase means approving the exact total in chat, paid via your Link wallet or a single-use virtual card scoped to that purchase — 'Muse never sees their underlying payment details,' per Stripe. The confirmation is real; so is your liability after you tap it.
Bank visibility without bank risk
Plaid gives Muse read-only balances, transactions, and liabilities — useful for 'find subscriptions I forgot' — with no payment or transfer product attached. It can see your money; it cannot move it.

The costs that matter aren't the tiers: training is on until you switch it off (Settings → Data controls), and approved purchases are yours under Link's terms. Set Permissions to 'Always ask,' keep a modest card in the Link wallet, and it's the safest agent on this page to actually run.

Can Muse spend my money without asking?
No — every purchase requires you to approve the exact total in chat. But once you approve, Stripe's Link terms make the purchase yours even if Muse misread you, and its purchase protections cover physical goods only. There's no spending limit yet.
Does Muse train on my emails?
Muse uses your interactions to train Meta's models by default — turn it off in Settings → Data controls. Your connected data isn't shared with Meta's ad systems, but Meta retains operational access to your Secure VM; the 'private even from Meta' tier is still a future product.
