What is Claude?

Anthropic's answer to the personal-agent moment was to stop selling one separately: on September 16, Cowork merged into Claude, so every request now goes to an assistant that 'decides whether that's a quick answer or a task' and, for tasks, keeps working in the cloud after you close your laptop. Add the built-in browser that lets Claude navigate and fill forms without touching your tabs or logins, background computer use that drives desktop apps while you work on something else, and connectors for Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Slack, and Microsoft 365, and the assistant most people know as a writing tool is quietly one of the more capable agents on this page — at the $20 Pro price, worldwide.

It's fifth for a clear reason: it's the most conservative agent in the field. Purchases are prohibited 'regardless of permissions,' it asks before each email it sends, and Anthropic states it doesn't train on your Gmail, Drive, or Calendar connector data — the strictest defaults here, and the ones we'd want every rival to copy. But this ranking scores what agents do, and Claude's agent identity is desktop-first and chat-shaped: it won't text you, won't call your dentist, and won't buy anything. October 21, 2026: Claude Duet. Anthropic opened a research preview of Claude Duet, a separate iOS/Android app where Claude runs as an always-on agent on its own cloud computer: a morning brief, check-ins every few hours, tasks you hand it, and approval requests before it sends, pays, signs, or deletes. It's built on Opus 5.5, included with Pro and Max for US accounts by waitlist, shares your plan's usage limits, and can buy through Link and Shop Pay on one-time cards. That answers two of the cons below (it comes to you, and it can spend), though Anthropic says personal errands 'aren't quite as strong' and it still can't text or call. Our editor was admitted on October 22; the first day's read is that it is very proactive, arguably too proactive, and that it arrives already knowing a lot about you because it inherits the main app's memory, which made it useful from the first brief. The rating holds at 4.1 until Duet has run the same errands as the rest of this page, which happens this week.

Claude pricing

Claude Pro at $20/month ($17 annual) now runs the agent on Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 — the top-scoring models in independent testing in September — and includes the merged agent behavior, cloud tasks, connectors, and the built-in browser; Max ($100+) raises limits; computer use is a Pro/Max beta. Team and Enterprise get the merge with at least 30 days' notice.

Compared with the field: no US gate, no invite, no separate agent subscription, and no purchase liability — because it can't purchase. The thing you give up is exactly that reach.
