What is Claude?
Anthropic's answer to the personal-agent moment was to stop selling one separately: on September 16, Cowork merged into Claude, so every request now goes to an assistant that 'decides whether that's a quick answer or a task' and, for tasks, keeps working in the cloud after you close your laptop. Add the built-in browser that lets Claude navigate and fill forms without touching your tabs or logins, background computer use that drives desktop apps while you work on something else, and connectors for Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Slack, and Microsoft 365, and the assistant most people know as a writing tool is quietly one of the more capable agents on this page — at the $20 Pro price, worldwide.
It's fifth for a clear reason: it's the most conservative agent in the field. Purchases are prohibited 'regardless of permissions,' it asks before each email it sends, and Anthropic states it doesn't train on your Gmail, Drive, or Calendar connector data — the strictest defaults here, and the ones we'd want every rival to copy. But this ranking scores what agents do, and Claude's agent identity is desktop-first and chat-shaped: it won't text you, won't call your dentist, and won't buy anything. A browser that doesn't touch yours
The built-in browser lives inside Claude Desktop with its own sessions: Claude 'doesn't touch your tabs or logins' and only sees saved passwords you choose to import (banking, email, and SSO stay unchecked by default). The category's cleanest separation between agent and person.

Our verdict
The right personal agent for anyone whose errands live on a computer and whose tolerance for surprises is low — and, honestly, the one whose defaults the rest of the category should adopt. It won't run your life from your phone yet; when Anthropic decides it should, this ranking changes. Until then, it's the safe fifth and a great first agent for Claude subscribers who didn't know they had one.
Skip it if: You want a phone-first agent that texts you and runs your life admin — Claude is a desktop-first, chat-shaped agent — or you need it to buy things: purchases are prohibited by design, regardless of permissions.
